THE SUCCESS STORY OF DARYNA SHANYUK

Darina Shaniuk (15 years old, from Ratno, Volyn region) fought for two years to reclaim the person she was before the accident that nearly took her life.

Diagnosis: consequences of severe traumatic brain injury (severe brain contusion, massive epidural hematoma, skull base and vault fracture, brain swelling). secondary internal hydrocephalus, compensated by ventriculoperitoneal shunting. spastic triparesis syndrome.

9 surgeries, 6 of which were on the brain.

Twice a craniotomy, a broken leg... few believed that darina would even survive.

The accident happened when the girl’s parents were expecting their third child.

During her first rehabilitation (november 2020-march 2021), she was brought to "modrychi" in a critical condition. she was completely bedridden, unconscious, with a tracheostomy and nasogastric tube, emaciated, and weighing only 35 kg.

Iryna Lirnyk, the chief doctor of MRC "modrychi," says that the initial efforts of the medical team were focused on stabilizing the heart, respiratory system, and urinary system (kidneys). the team fought against infectious complications, conducted detoxification therapy, antibiotic therapy, managed her nutrition, water balance, and worked on restoring the body's protein and muscle mass.

Thanks to simultaneous treatment and a comprehensive rehabilitation program by a large team of specialists, darina was able to recover significantly:✔️ regained consciousness,✔️ began swallowing and chewing,✔️ had her tracheostomy removed, started speaking, and became stronger and more resilient.

Occupational therapist marta kovalchuk recalls that the first sessions with darina took place in bed. over time, as she recovered, darina began working in the rehabilitation hall.

The occupational therapist worked on restoring activities of daily living (such as independent eating, personal hygiene, dressing/undressing) and improving cognitive functions and strengthening the upper limbs.

Active rehabilitation helped darina become more conscious and cognitively developed. the first movements, the first verticalization, and tentative steps. she progressed well, and over time, everyone listened with great pleasure as darina recited poems and took her first steps.

The rehabilitation program included:

✔️ occupational therapy,
✔️ rehabilitation massage,
✔️ sessions with a speech therapist,
✔️ physical therapy procedures and pediatric consultations.

The parents played a crucial role in the rehabilitation process. her mother became a vital link in the chain that connected all the specialists involved in darina’s recovery, strictly following all recommendations and unwaveringly believing in her daughter's recovery.
