Coma is not a sentence
Arriving at our center unconscious and bedridden, Serhiy leaves "Modrychi" walking on his own, with a smile and his own steps!
Serhiy Pelykh (19 years old, Shveikiv village, Ternopil region) arrived at the Medical Rehabilitation Center "Modrychi" a month after a tragic car accident, which resulted in a closed head injury.
His condition was severe and unstable.
Serhiy was in a coma, immobile, dependent on external care, with a tracheostomy and Foley catheter, and experiencing spasticity.
Rehabilitation was challenging but successful.
Over a month and a half of rehabilitation, Serhiy showed rapid positive progress.
The patient followed an individualized rehabilitation program, which took into account detailed diagnostics and research results. Occupational therapist Marta Kovalchuk worked with Serhiy from the first day of rehabilitation in the intensive care unit.
We set several key goals:
✔️ Develop fine motor skills in the hands;
✔️ Gradually restore memory and cognition;
✔️ Teach self-care in daily activities.
Physical therapist Maksym Kryvyi focused on:
✔️ Strengthening muscles;
✔️ Overcoming contractures;
✔️ Teaching initial independent movements;
✔️ Verticalization;
✔️ Gradual work towards independent walking.
Over 1.5 months
Sergiy began eating and swallowing independently, speaking, thinking clearly, standing, sitting, swimming, and he became self-sufficient in daily life. Most importantly, he started walking independently with the help of a single-point cane.
We successfully restored movements in his right limbs. Nearly a month later, we performed decannulation and removed the Foley catheter.
Sergiy underwent a comprehensive rehabilitation program, including kinesiotherapy, ergotherapy, magnetotherapy, rehabilitative massage, hydrokinetic therapy, antispastic and electro-vacuum therapy, art therapy, and sessions with a speech therapist and psychologist.
He also had consultations with a urologist, neurologist, cardiologist, therapist, and ENT specialist.
After discharge, the patient received a home rehabilitation program to continue his recovery and maintain the rapid progress achieved through the efforts of our entire team, as well as his personal will and truly strong character.
___________
For us, there is no greater reward than when a patient who arrived bedridden and unconscious leaves "Modrychi" independently, with a smile and walking on their own!
