Pediatric rehabilitation and its features
"If we do everything for the child, we take away their future."
Occupational therapist Onufriya Bachynska
Ivan Koritnyuk first came to the Medical Rehabilitation Center "Modrychi" at 9 months old. For him, rehabilitation is the only option for development, so he undergoes it 2-3 times a year. The boy will turn 5 years old in May.
Approach Features
Establishing a connection with the child, effectively communicating with parents, and creating a strong synergy among all specialists involved in the patient's recovery is our top priority and crucial task.
Rehabilitation for a child is always a game with a clear goal leading to the expected result. It is important to engage, create interactivity, and motivate the young patient. This is why sessions with children include sensory work, motor skills, games, songs, and story therapy.
Ivan’s Diagnosis: Acute Cerebral Circulatory Disorder (GPC) due to a fall.
The physical therapists' task was to teach the young patient to move, bear weight on his legs, stand, and walk.
Our occupational therapist focused more on the emotional and cognitive aspects and developed hand mobility.
We always assess the child's deficits and potential abilities and work on them. We should not demand from the child what they cannot achieve due to their condition, says Onufriya Bachynska.
For each child, we create an individual rehabilitation program, which may vary depending on the patient's condition and needs. However, it generally includes sessions with physical therapists and occupational therapists, art therapy, massages, hydrotherapy in our twenty-meter pool equipped with a Gouldman lift, balneological procedures, and the essential team support of all specialists involved in the rehabilitation process.
It is also important that the Medical Rehabilitation Center "Modrychi" is located amidst a picturesque forest. The fresh air, wooden cottages, fully adapted restrooms, and the entire center’s territory create a non-hospital atmosphere where the child's recovery process is much more effective.
"The only general advice for parents is not to pity the child. Do not treat them as sick, give them a chance to develop. When we do everything for the child, we simply take away their future."
With persistent, comprehensive work, the results will always become evident:
✔️ By applying CIMT therapy (Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, a method involving the isolation of the unaffected hand), Ivan can grasp objects with his affected hand.
✔️ After sensory therapy, he understands and perceives his body's position in space; he can control it, though not perfectly, he is able to do so.
✔️ He can stand up from the floor by himself (a result of kinesitherapy).
✔️ He can speak.
✔️ He is cognitively developed.
✔️ He navigates in space.
✔️ He is beginning to recognize and feel the need for the toilet.
✔️ He washes and eats independently.
✔️ He dresses with minimal assistance.
We continually work on the motor activity of the hand, with a primary focus in occupational therapy on functionality and independence.
___________
Pediatric rehabilitation is a unique process where establishing close cooperation with parents is crucial; their focus on the outcome helps achieve the desired results.
